Argonauts Finish Third at Muddy Azalea City Classic

first_img Tyler Bowman (Photo by UWF Cross Country) Share MOBILE, Ala. – On a muddy Saturday morning at the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park, the West Florida men’s cross country team finished third at the Azalea City Classic 5k race hosted by South Alabama.  USA took the team title with 18 points, while Southeastern Louisiana placed second with 66, edging the Argonauts by two points at 68.The Argonauts placed ahead of Loyola New Orleans, Dillard, Mobile, and Spring Hill.  Sophomore Tyler Bowman (Pensacola, Fla./West Florida HS) led UWF with a ninth place finish in a time of 17:36.  Micah Tirop of South Alabama won the event in 15:43.Under extremely muddy conditions, race times were slower than normal.  Sophomore Jared Black (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon HS) and freshman Ben Chastain (Fort Walton Beach, Fla./Fort Walton Beach HS) finished 13th and 14th, respectively, in an identical time of 17:55.  Freshman Martinique Sykes (Orange Park, Fla./Orange Park HS) finished 15th in a time of 18:01, followed by Dominique Sykes (Orange Park, Fla./Orange Park HS) in 18th place with a time of 18:09, rounding out the scoring five for West Florida.Also competing for the Argos was freshman Tim Keebler (Pace, Fla./Pace HS), who finished 19th in his first collegiate event with a time of 18:13.  Freshman Malachi Wilkins (Orlando, Fla./Boone HS) finished 29th overall, with a time of 20:04.  South Alabama won the meet with six finishers in the top seven spots.“This wasn’t a race to focus on times for performance, but rather to see how we did against opponents,” stated Head Coach John Bergen.  “With running conditions very poor, it was a challenge to see who could overcome the best.  We had a strong pack of six runners working together between ninth and 19th place.”Next up for UWF is the Gulf Coast Stampede on October 3rd at the Escambia County Equestrian Center.  The men’s 8k race is set for 8:00 am, as the Argos will try to defend their title from last year.
