Southland Conference Announces Football Players of the Week

first_imgFRISCO, Texas – Lamar senior wide receiver Mark Roberts was named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Abilene Christian junior cornerback Jonathan Epps earned defensive player of the week award while Lamar sophomore kicker/punter Juan Carranco was named the special teams player of the week. Defensive Player of the Week:  Jonathan Epps, Abilene ChristianEpps had two interceptions in his first career start at cornerback to help lead Abilene Christian to a 52-35 upset win against Central Arkansas. The junior from Fort Worth, Texas (Boswell H.S.), recorded his first interception late in the first half, returning it 29 yards to the ACU 35-yard line to help set up a field goal right before halftime. Epps snagged his second interception in the fourth quarter, returning it 68 yards for a touchdown to push the Wildcat lead to 45-28 with 7:50 remaining in the contest. Epps also added four tackles and one pass breakup in the win. Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors. Honorable Mention:  DaQuan Stewart, Lamar; Michael Wade, Sam Houston State; Nick Ginn, UIW; Damon Medcafe, Northwestern State. Special Teams Player of the Week: Juan Carranco, LamarCarranco accounted for 12 of Lamar’s points in the Cardinals’ 72-14 win against Houston Baptist. The sophomore from Dayton, Texas (Dayton H.S.), went 9-for-10 in PATs while connecting on a 43-yard field goal, his lone attempt of the game. Carranco has recorded a 31-yard punt on the night. Offensive Player of the Week:  Mark Roberts, LamarRoberts had a record-setting performance in Lamar’s 72-14 win against Houston Baptist. The senior from Orange, Texas (West Orange Stark H.S.), became the school’s all-time leader in touchdown catches with 19 after his four scores against the Huskies. In one half of action, Roberts recorded 205 receiving yards and touchdown catches of 31, 61, 81 and 26 yards. Roberts tied the school record for points in a game (24) and notched the third-most receiving yards in a single game in program history.last_img
