The province is celebrating Nova Scotians who drive community economic growth and prosperity. Nominations for Community Excellence Awards can be submitted until July 30, for the 2011 Celebrating Communities Conference and Awards at the Rodd Grand Hotel in Yarmouth Sept. 28-30. A new award, Excellence in Social Enterprise, will recognize contributions to jobsHere, the province’s plan to grow the economy. “Prosperous communities are vital to the economic growth of this province,” said Minister of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism, Percy Paris. “These awards allow us to recognize those who spend a significant amount of time and effort strengthening our communities and making life better for families in every region.” Hosted by the Conseil de développement économique de la Nouvelle-Écosse, this year’s bilingual conference is expected to draw upwards of 300 participants from across the province and will focus on community development and job creation in the Acadian communities of Clare, Argyle and Yarmouth. “We are honoured to be hosting the third edition of this prestigious conference,” said executive director of Le Conseil de développement économique de la Nouvelle-Écosse, Julie Oliver. “Through this year’s Acadian theme, we are excited to feature many successful initiatives undertaken in the Clare and Argyle areas as well as some innovative projects taking place in Yarmouth and other regions throughout the province.” The biennial conference attracts people from social, cultural, heritage and environmental groups, and all levels of government interested in sharing and learning about community and government working together. The awards gala, cultural celebration and daily workshops will focus on the spirit of innovative, community-led solutions.
