These Robotic Sumo Wrestlers Are Totally Changing the Game

first_img Review: ‘Daemon X Machina’ Has Big Robots, Small Fun on Nintendo SwitchThis Robot Is Equal Parts Lawnmower and Snow Blower Stay on target If you’re into sumo wrestling, you probably know how plodding the matches can be. You’ve got the behemoth fighters and the matches themselves, and the actual event and fanfare surrounding all that. It can take a while to finish. But these two metal sumo wrestlers, or robots if you want to be primitive about it (robots are people too!) are changing the game in a ton of cool ways. For one thing, these zippy robo sumo wrestlers can engage and finish a sumo wrestling match in all of five seconds. They zoom toward each other like angry Roombas and duke it out before you can blink an eye. It’s a whole lot more efficient than regular sumo, that’s for sure. Japan’s national sport takes on a dramatically different look when you bring these specially-built robots into the mix. Some of the robots have mods like metal blades or wider arms and don’t look, unlike something you’d see in the show Robot Wars where teams build vicious robots to try and decimate their competition. And this isn’t just a random, one-off thing, either. There are actual robot sumo tournaments, with the last one having taken place in December 2016.In fact, there’s another one coming up on the horizon: the 29th international sumo robot tournament. It’s coming in December of this year, and it’ll likely feature some of the awesome kinds of robots you can see in the video above making regular sumo wrestlers look like absolute fools. So if you’re kind of interested in sumo wrestling but aren’t so interesting in watching big guys going toe to toe in an arena and want something a little more engaging to follow, perhaps your true sports calling is that of robo sumo.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.last_img
